Matthew D. Owen

Attorney, Whitford & Owen PLLC

Admitted to the Kentucky Bar: 2012

Matthew Owen came to bankruptcy law by way of a broader legal education — and made a deliberate choice to stay.

He earned his undergraduate degree in Finance from the University of Kentucky in 2009, a background that gives him an unusually clear-eyed view of his clients’ full financial picture. He then attended Chase College of Law, graduating in 2012, and began his legal career at a general practice firm in central Kentucky where he worked across bankruptcy, criminal, real estate, family law, and personal injury.

He chose to focus on bankruptcy because he found it to be unlike any other area of law: few things an attorney can do have as immediate and dramatic an impact on a person’s life as a successful bankruptcy filing. When a garnishment stops, when a foreclosure is halted, when decades of debt are discharged — people feel it the same day.

Matthew has filed thousands of bankruptcy cases across Louisville, Lexington, Southern Indiana, and surrounding counties. Clients regularly describe him as responsive, thorough, and someone who makes a confusing process feel manageable. He is known for staying in contact throughout a case so clients always know what to expect and when.
